Scandal at FUS: Jorge Bermúdez is ordered to return money

Jorge "Fogata" Bermúdez, a historic union bureaucrat of the Uruguayan Health Federation (FUS), is at the center of the storm within his own union.

It became known that he received money in his personal bank account that should have gone to the union's official account under the concept of "Training Fund."

The workers' money, instead of going to a bank account in the name of FUS, went to an account in Bermúdez's own name at Scotiabank.

FUS's Central Council decided last Wednesday the 30th to formally demand that he return the total amount deposited in his bank accounts within the next three days.

In addition, he must submit a "detailed and explanatory account of all amounts received under these concepts," according to the statement signed by FUS's current secretary, Marcos Franco.

"Hand in the cookie jar"

FUS's Central Council had a heated discussion where several union members raised their voices and pointed at Bermúdez for appropriating the workers' money.

There was a strong exchange of words, and there was talk of "theft" and "hand in the cookie jar," referring to the employees' money by the eternal union bureaucrat linked to the Communist Party.

The "Training Fund" is a tool that is financed with contributions from the mutual health organizations.

Each mutual health company must pay $26 per month per non-medical worker.

Jorge Bermúdez currently serves as the union's Training Secretary and is part of the executive secretariat of PIT-CNT.

More accusations against Bermúdez

In addition to having kept the money that belongs to private health workers, the communist unionist is also accused of his taste for the good life.

At the FUS office on Luis Sambucetti Street near Italia Avenue, he had a very comfortable and spacious office at his disposal.

It also emerged that Bermúdez enjoys a high-end car with a driver included. It is reportedly a 2024 BMW. All paid for with union funds.

It is striking that while in the private health sector there are nurses who work double shifts, even on Sundays and holidays, their main union leader lives like a rich man, with a large private office and a luxury car entirely at his disposal.

All these privileges are paid for with the workers' money.

The mega scam in Sunca

This union scandal adds to the mega scam in Sunca perpetrated by unionists from the Communist Party.

This scam amounts to $1,200,000, according to prosecutor Gilberto Rodríguez, who is handling the case.

It is no coincidence that all the unionists involved in illegal acts are from the Communist Party.

The investigation in Sunca indicates that the money stolen from construction workers was used to finance the party's 2024 election campaign and also the 2025 departmental election campaign.

The financing of the PIT-CNT campaign that promoted the referendum against the social security system is also under criminal investigation.

Everything is murky, dark and very opaque. The explanations provided by the unionists do not add up in any way and are riddled with contradictions.

If there were truly transparency, things would be done differently, but they choose to hide and conceal data, and not to provide information in a transparent manner.

This must be thoroughly investigated.
