The conflict began during the questioning of the Minister of Livestock, Luis Alfredo Fratti, by National Party senator Sebastián Da Silva on Wednesday, August 13.
Senator Nicolás Viera (MPP - Broad Front) questioned Da Silva's style, accusing him of dragging the questioning "through the mud" with a disrespectful tone, and of having publicly recommended investing in Conexión Ganadera, a company linked to a massive scam.
Specifically, Viera accused Da Silva of being a scammer.
The latter, visibly offended, replied with the phrase "fucking faggot" directed at Viera, as recorded in the official broadcast and press reports.
Viera reported the insult as a "homophobic hate crime," pointing out that it is punishable in Uruguay and that he will not accept an apology, since he considers the act serious and part of a systematic pattern of behavior.

Viera threatened Da Silva with political actions, such as requesting the suspension of the National Party senator in the Senate, and legal actions such as a criminal complaint.
Apologies
Meanwhile, Da Silva issued a public apology on social media and in interviews, although he justified his reaction by saying he felt accused of being linked to the Conexión Ganadera scam, which he described as "defamation."
He denied having been part of the scam and regretted the impact of the episode on his family.
The Broad Front is considering political sanctions, while the National and Colorado Party caucuses defended Da Silva, attributing the escalation to Viera's provocation.
