Just over six months before its start, the 2026 World Cupalready has the vast majority of its qualified teams. During this FIFA November window, UEFA and CONCACAF concluded their qualifiers, and all participants for both the European play-off and the international play-off have been confirmed.
Regarding the qualification process in the old continent, the last two matchdays of each of the 12 groups were played. The first to qualify were France and Croatia, who mathematically secured their spot one matchday early. After the final match, Portugal, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, and Scotland joined them. It should be noted that Norway, Austria, and Scotland had not qualified for a World Cup in 28 years, with their last appearance being France 98.
Across the Atlantic, North America and the Caribbean also determined their qualified teams. Panama, Curaçao, and Haiti finished first in their respective groups and secured their tickets to the World Cup. Panama and Haiti will make their second appearances at a World Cup after Russia 2018 and West Germany 1974, respectively, while Curaçao will play in it for the first time in its history.

How and When Are the Play-offs
With 42 teams, only the last six tickets for the 2026 World Cup remain to be decided. Of that number, four are from the UEFA play-off and two from the international play-off.
The European play-off will feature Italy, Albania, Ireland, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, Bosnia, Wales, Denmark, Kosovo, and Türkiye, teams that finished as runners-up in their qualifying groups. Romania, Sweden, Northern Ireland, and North Macedonia, the four best teams from the 2024/2025 Nations League that did not achieve direct qualification, will also join this group.
To determine its four qualified teams, eight single-leg semi-final matchups will be played (March 26), from which four finals (March 31) will emerge. The winners will secure the last available spots for Europe. The draw for the matchups in this phase will take place on Thursday, November 20 in Zurich, Switzerland.
Meanwhile, the international play-off will feature six teams: Iraq (AFC), Republic of the Congo (CAF), Bolivia (CONMEBOL), New Caledonia (Oceania), Jamaica and Suriname (CONCACAF). The competition will take place between March 23 and 31 in Mexico, for the last two available spots for the World Cup.
Los integrantes de los repechajes
The tournament will function as a mini single-elimination tournament, with all matches played as single games. In the first round, the semi-finals will be played between the four lowest-ranked teams in the FIFA ranking (Jamaica, Bolivia, Suriname, and New Caledonia). Then, two finals will be played, pitting the winners of those matchups against the two highest-ranked teams, Congo and Iraq.
World Cup Draw and Format
The group stage draw will take place on December 5, 2025 at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, although six spots will still remain unclaimed that day: four from UEFA and two from the international play-off, which will be decided in March 2026.
The 23rd edition of the World Cup will feature, for the first time, 48 teams. There will be 12 groups of 4 teams, with the top two and the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 32. In total, 104 matches will be played over 39 days of competition.
The tournament will open on June 11, 2026 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico and will conclude on July 29 with the grand final at MetLife Stadium in New York.
