In the World Cup preview, the Inter Miami striker dropped the possibility of playing once again with Celeste

Months after announcing his retirement from the Uruguayan national team, Luis Suárez left open the possibility of representing his country again after his retirement in September 2024.

The historic striker Charrúa had stepped aside after the goalless draw against Paraguay for date 7 of the South American Qualifiers at the Centenario Stadium, in the midst of a tense relationship with coach Marcelo Bielsa, whom he later pointed to out of distractions during the last Copa América. However, over time, the conflict seems to have been left behind, and a few weeks before the start of the 2026 World Cup, the soccer player himself now does not rule out returning

.

“Obviously, being Uruguayan, you would never say no to the National Team. At the time, I took a step aside because I saw that I had to give way to young people. Then I said things I shouldn't have said, it wasn't the right time, but I already apologized to those I had to apologize to,” he said at an Inter Miami press conference

Along the same lines, he reaffirmed his position in the face of the World Cup: “Now all we have to do is keep working and as I said, I would never say no to the Uruguayan national team if they need me. Especially being so close to a World Cup.”

In addition, the Gunman reflected on the dynamics of the World Cups and was confident in the potential of his selection. “A World Cup is very even, it depends on how they arrive emotionally, how the circumstances of the days and the games go by. Look at the previous World Cup, Argentina lost the first game, it looked like it was eliminated and ended up becoming world champion. A World Cup is 24-hour coexistence with teammates, and whoever comes in the best will win it. I will always prefer that Uruguay wins,”

he said.

Although his name does not appear among the priorities of the generational change that Bielsa promotes to face the next World Cup with the national team, the experienced goal scorer made it clear that he is available. La Celeste will debut against Saudi Arabia on June 15 in Miami for the first round of Group H, an area that it also shares with Spain and Cape Verde
