In a context of tension over the military offensive against Iran and President Donald Trump's discomfort with some of his traditional allies, an important figure in the Republican Party raised the possibility of a historic shift in U.S. foreign policy with respect to the Falkland Islands.
This is Marc Zell, vice president of Republicans Overseas and president of Republicans Overseas Israel, close to Trump, who published a message on the social network X in which he suggested that the US administration should consider supporting Argentina's claim to sovereignty over the islands, leaving aside the United Kingdom.
The approach is framed in the current crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, where the United States seeks to guarantee the safety of international maritime traffic.
In this scenario, Zell contrasting the attitude of the British with that of the Argentine government headed by Javier Milei.
“Argentina is sending naval units to help the United States safeguard international maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The United Kingdom has refused,” he wrote, referring directly to the lack of British collaboration in a strategic area for global trade and energy supply
.However, despite the great support offered by Milei to the United States and Israel, the claim that Argentina is sending "naval units" to Ormuz is false.
Based on that comparison, the Republican leader questioned the position of the United Kingdom and raised the possibility of a political response from Washington. “In view of the United Kingdom's cowardly refusal to support the United States, it would be appropriate for the Trump administration to consider reversing its policy and supporting the Argentine claim
