U.S. intelligence reportedly warned Warsaw about a possible limited attack aimed at gauging the response of the Atlantic Alliance

The United States has warned the Government of Poland about the possibility that Russia is preparing a limited military operation against Polish territory aimed at testing the response capability and unity of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

According to the publication, the information comes from intelligence assessments shared between Washington and Warsaw, suggesting that Moscow might opt for a carefully calculated provocation instead of a large-scale military offensive.

The alleged purpose would be to measure the speed with which allies would respond to aggression against one of the alliance's members and to assess whether there is consensus to apply Article 5 of the treaty, which states that an attack against one member state constitutes an attack against all.

The cited sources indicate that the U.S. administration conveyed these concerns to Polish authorities in recent meetings. Although there is not yet a definitive decision from the Kremlin to execute the operation, intelligence agencies believe that the scenario warrants close monitoring due to the ongoing tension in Eastern Europe.

Among the evaluated hypotheses is the possibility of a drone or missile attack against strategic infrastructure on Polish territory, as well as a limited incursion from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad or from Belarus, a country that maintains a close military alliance with Moscow. Another alternative considered would be the conduct of sabotage acts or hybrid actions targeting energy facilities, transportation networks, or other critical objectives.

According to the report, an operation of this kind would have a strong political component in addition to the military one. Russia would seek to generate uncertainty within NATO regarding the nature of the incident and provoke a debate among allies about the advisability of responding militarily, especially if Moscow presents the action as a mistake, a border accident, or a limited operation.

Many analysts believe that a strategy of this nature would allow the Kremlin to assess the degree of cohesion of the Western alliance without assuming the high risk that an open conflict with the 32 NATO member countries would entail. It could also serve to gauge the willingness of the United States and major European powers to intervene quickly in defense of Poland.

The report adds that Russia could use a potential crisis to increase pressure during negotiations related to the war in Ukraine. In that scenario, the Kremlin would attempt to demonstrate that it retains the capacity to open new flashpoints of tension in Europe and use that advantage as a negotiating tool against the West.

Poland occupies a strategic position within the European security framework. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the country has become one of the main logistical centers for the shipment of Western weapons and military aid to Kyiv. Additionally, it hosts significant contingents of U.S. troops and those from other allied countries, as well as air defense systems and bases used by NATO to reinforce the eastern flank of the organization.

In recent years, Warsaw has also significantly increased its defense budget and accelerated the modernization of its Armed Forces through the acquisition of tanks, missile defense systems, combat aircraft, and other military equipment aimed at strengthening its deterrent capacity against a possible Russian threat.

The warnings issued come at a time when various Western governments have reported an increase in hybrid operations attributed to Russia. These include disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, sabotage, and other covert actions aimed at destabilizing European countries without resorting to conventional military confrontation.

So far, the Russian government has not publicly responded to the content of the report nor acknowledged the existence of plans to carry out an operation against Poland. U.S. authorities have also not disclosed official details about the intelligence cited by the British newspaper.

Nevertheless, the information reflects the concern among several NATO members about the possibility that Russia might opt for limited actions aimed at testing the credibility of the alliance's collective defense guarantees. In this context, Poland continues to strengthen the surveillance of its borders and maintains close coordination with the United States and the rest of its allies to respond to any eventuality.

Although there are currently no public indications of an imminent attack, the report highlights that tensions between Russia and NATO remain high and that Western intelligence services continue to assess various scenarios that could affect the security of the eastern European flank.
