While the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the UBA is promoting a crisis discourse, with complaints of mass resignation and complaints against the national government, the university's own official data show a different reality. Far from shrinking, the teaching staff not only remained, but grew in recent years
.
According to information released by the Undersecretary of University Policy, Alejandro “El Profe” Álvarez, the number of positions increased from 1968 in May 2023 to 2095 in February 2026. The data not only contradicts the idea of a cutback, but it also exposes a concrete expansion of the teaching structure in
that period. The number of teachers increased in the Faculty of Exact Sciences.
The growth is no less: this is more than 120 additional positions in less than three years, in a period when different sectors linked to the university installed the idea of generalized defunding. Far from that narrative, the numbers show a structure that not only maintains, but expands.
The detail of the data also reinforces this trend. Simple dedications — the most numerous — have seen a sustained increase, from 1,404 positions in May 2023 to 1,527 in February 2026. At the same time, exclusive and semi-exclusive dedications remain relatively stable, with no evidence of a significant reduction
.
The discussion heated up after the official account of Exactas UBA falsely stated that 438 teachers and researchers left the faculty since the beginning of Javier Milei's government, with a rate of resignation of “one every two
days”.
Faced with these statements, the Undersecretary of University Policy went to the crossroads and questioned both the figures released and the context in which they were installed. In this context, he pointed out against the faculty authorities and pointed out that, after the political act led by Axel Kicillof within the UBA, classes have not been held again
The official also rejected complaints of an alleged “massive flight” of teachers and remarked that such statements are not consistent with official data. As he argued, beyond possible internal movements, the total number of positions not only did not fall, but it has increased in recent years
.
The Government demanded to guarantee classes and warned about funding
In the midst of the university conflict, the national government gave universities 48 hours to submit a plan to guarantee the continuity of classes, exams and the recovery of content in the face of teacher stoppages
.
The measure was announced by the Ministry of Human Capital, through the Undersecretary for University Policies led by Alejandro “El Profe” Álvarez, in a context of growing concern about the suspension of academic activities, which, in some cases, extends for weeks.
The release from Human Capital.
The requirement included specific points: ensuring access to establishments for teachers who do not adhere to force measures, implementing alternatives such as virtual classes or rescheduling, and ensuring that students do not lose regularity
or evaluation instances.
In addition, the Government made it clear that state funding is tied to the effective functioning of the system and warned that, in the event of non-compliance, supervisory bodies could intervene and the allocation of resources could be reviewed, thus reinforcing pressure on university authorities.
