The Romanian patriotic politician Călin Georgescu, known for his staunch opposition to NATO and the European Union, announced his retirement from political life on May 26, 2025.
In a video message posted on social media, Georgescu stated that he had made the personal decision to become a mere "observer of public and social life", and that he would devote more time to his family. He asserted that this was not a resignation, but a "responsible choice."
Georgescu had been a little-known figure until his unbelievable rise in the first round of the presidential elections in November 2024, where he obtained 22.9% of the votes.
However, the Constitutional Court of Romania arbitrarily annulled the results after arguing with scarcely credible evidence of foreign interference in his favor, specifically by Russia. According to the authorities, Georgescu allegedly benefited from a hybrid campaign of disinformation and manipulation on social media, especially on TikTok.

Subsequently, he was banned from participating in the repeat election held in May 2025, because he faces multiple criminal charges related to the alleged promotion of "fascist ideologies" and the glorification of the Romanian World War II marshal, Ion Antonescu.
In his speech, Georgescu stated that with the end of the electoral process, "this stage of the sovereigntist movement" was also coming to a close. He thanked his supporters, stating that they had been harassed, humiliated, and marginalized, and expressed his gratitude to his opponents as well.
