Albert Ramdin was elected Secretary General and the left took control of the OAS

The candidate from Suriname, who will be the new Secretary General, is backed by Lula, Boric, Petro, Evo Morales, and Orsi.

With the help of the entire Latin American left, along with the support of the Chinese regime, the Surinamese Foreign Minister, Albert Ramdin, was elected "by acclamation" as the new Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS).

Ramdin received strong backing from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Latin America, while the White House showed willingness to facilitate his arrival to the position, which will be occupied by Luis Almagro until May.

When the time for voting came, the representatives of Dominica and Peru proposed that it be "by acclamation" following the withdrawal of Paraguay's candidacy, led by Rubén Ramírez.

The OAS Assembly approved the motion, and at 11:20 AM (Eastern Time in the United States), Ramdin assumed the role of Secretary General of the OAS.

In the old building of the regional forum, located a few blocks from the White House, applause and smiles were heard among the CARICOM ambassadors, as it is the first time Caribbean countries have chosen a leader for the OAS.

Who is Albert Ramdin?

Albert Ramdin, current Foreign Minister of Suriname and with a troubling trajectory aligned with socialism, was the favorite candidate thanks to the support of Caribbean countries and leftist governments and politicians such as Lula da Silva, Gabriel Boric, Gustavo Petro, Evo Morales, and Yamandú Orsi.

Ramdin's election represents a threat to the independence of the OAS and seeks to benefit the leftist dictatorial regimes in Latin America.

Ramdin, former Assistant Secretary General of the OAS (2005-2015), built a close relationship with China throughout his career. His candidacy had been openly supported by the Chinese regime, and he had secured the vote of the 14 Caribbean countries, as well as Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay, whose leftist governments support Beijing's strategy.

With Ramdin's victory, China could use the organization to consolidate its presence in the region, facilitate the access of Chinese state-owned companies to Latin American markets, and promote the agenda of socialist dictatorships in Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua.

Ramdin's connections with China are not new. In 2006, when he was Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, he traveled to Beijing and stated that his goal was to "expand and deepen" the relationship between China and the OAS. Since then, he has been an unwavering advocate of rapprochement with the Chinese regime.

In November 2023, in an interview with the Chinese state media Global Times, Ramdin reaffirmed his loyalty to China, declaring: "We recognize one China and firmly support that principle." He also admitted that Suriname's diplomatic missions in Washington and New York work "hand in hand" with those of China, highlighting Beijing's dangerous influence in the region.
