Argentine football has added a new chapter to its long list of improvised decisions and regulatory controversies. Over the past few years, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has implemented sudden changes (elimination of relegation, tournaments that change format on the fly, the 30-team league) and this Thursday once again found itself at the center of attention after an unexpected turn in the offices of the Professional League.
Without major announcements, the LPF officially named Rosario Central as annual champion for finishing first in the Annual Table. This distinction had not existed under that name until now and emerged in parallel with the postponement of the International Supercup, a cup for which the best team of the year qualified without any kind of recognition to face the winner of the Champions Trophy (winners of the Apertura and Clausura).
After the directors' meeting, president Gonzalo Belloso celebrated the recognition alongside Jorge Broun, Ariel Holan, and Ángel Di María, who were part of the auriazul delegation. "The best team of the year was recognized. It's well deserved for a club like ours that was first from the first matchday to the last, that earned more points than anyone, that lost only two matches all year. It's a tournament that was missing and Argentine football needed to have this again," stated the Canalla's leader.
