Axel Kicillof didn't reach an agreement with Cristina and called for the PASO in the Province.

However, they confirmed that the intention of the Buenos Aires Executive is to move forward with the suspension of the PASO

After failing to reach an agreement with Cristina Kirchner, the ultra-Kirchnerist governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, signed today decree 367/2025 to call for the Primary, Open, Simultaneous, and Mandatory (PASO) elections, scheduled for July 13.

However, from La Plata, they confirmed that the intention of the Buenos Aires Executive is to move forward with the suspension of the PASO, although they clarified that this decision depends exclusively on the Legislature. If held, the primary elections would cost the people of Buenos Aires around 45 to 50 million dollars.

"Having fulfilled this legal obligation, the Provincial Executive Power reiterates its position: the suspension of the PASO regime for 2025 in the Province of Buenos Aires and the establishment of adjustments to the electoral deadlines and other necessary provisions for the normal development of the general elections scheduled for the current year," they stated from the provincial Government.

Kicillof himself reaffirmed his position on the primaries during the opening of the ordinary session period of the Legislature, last March 5.

"I understand that, given the context, the arguments in favor of suspending the PASO are more than reasonable. In any case, the decision belongs to this Legislature, and I will be respectful of it. What I ask of you is promptness," he expressed on that occasion.

Days ago, in an interview, Kicillof reaffirmed his stance that the PASO doesn't make much sense, reiterating that the decision belongs to the Legislature and must be made promptly.

The governor's public statements about the PASO caused discomfort in the Buenos Aires Legislative Power. Both the opposition and a sector of the officialdom demanded greater clarity on the electoral schedule, especially after it was confirmed this Thursday that the midterm elections for national deputies and senators will be held on October 26, according to the new electoral calendar made official by the National Electoral Chamber in Extraordinary Agreement No. 26.

In that same resolution, it was established that, following the Government's publication in the Official Gazette confirming the suspension of the Primary, Open, Simultaneous, and Mandatory (PASO), April 19 will be the deadline for closing the provisional register and incorporating registration updates. From April 29, citizens will be able to consult the updated register.
