The Budget and Taxes Committee of the Buenos Aires Senate approved on Tuesday the bill for the promotion and development of the audiovisual industry, an initiative presented by the ultra-Kirchnerist governor Axel Kicillof that provides for the creation of a special fund of $675 million supposedly aimed at "promoting film production" in the province of Buenos Aires.
The project, which the provincial leader had submitted to the Legislature in mid-2023, was approved by a majority thanks to the votes of the eight Peronist senators who are members of the committee, while the opposition decided not to support the delusional initiative, which doesn't address the real priorities of Buenos Aires residents and could become a new political slush fund for Kirchnerism.
The so-called "Audiovisual Law" had received preliminary approval in the Chamber of Deputies in November 2023, but was put on hold at the end of last year due to budget discussions. Now, with renewed momentum from the Buenos Aires ruling party, the bill has been dusted off and is once again moving forward in the Senate.

According to the text of the bill, a development fund of $675 million will be created, which will be updated annually by the Buenos Aires Budget Law, using as a reference the variation in the price of movie tickets set by the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA). In other words, the spending allocated to this sector will automatically increase every year, regardless of the province's economic performance or fiscal situation.
