The Supreme Federal Court (STF) confirmed this Thursday the sentence of 27 years and 3 months in prison against former president Jair Bolsonaro for the alleged attempted coup d'état in 2022, a narrative fabricated by Lula to neutralize the right-wing leader and bury his main electoral opponent.
The decision was made by the First Chamber of the STF, with a 4-1 vote, in which judges closely linked to the current Workers' Party government aligned. The decisive vote was cast by Cristiano Zanin, Lula's former personal lawyer, which has sparked strong questions about the impartiality of the process. Alongside Zanin, Alexandre de Moraes, Cármen Lúcia, and Flávio Dino voted in favor of the conviction. The only dissenting vote came from Luiz Fux, who considered it inappropriate for the STF to take on this case.

The ruling also implicates seven former Bolsonaro aides with sentences ranging from 16 to 26 years:
Alexandre Ramagem, former director of the Intelligence Agency: 16 years.
Almir Garnier, former Navy commander: 24 years.
Anderson Torres, former Minister of Justice: 24 years.
Augusto Heleno, former Minister of the Institutional Security Office: 21 years.
Mauro Cid, former presidential adviser and whistleblower in the case.
Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, former Minister of Defense: 19 years.
Walter Souza Braga Netto, former Chief of Staff: 26 years.

"The evidence allows us to conclude that the defendants intended to break the democratic rule of law," Zanin stated, while the STF consolidated what many consider the true democratic breakdown: imprisoning the opposition leader in a trial without guarantees.
The official STF narrative keeps that Bolsonaro sought "to remain in power" and establish a "dictatorship." However, from the Bolsonaro camp, a fabricated process is denounced that criminalizes political dissent, while Lula himself—with his history of corruption and imprisonment—benefits from a judicial apparatus that serves his interests.
Marco Rubio.
The scandal had international repercussions. Marco Rubio, Secretary of State for Donald Trump, condemned the STF's decision and stated: "The political persecution by the sanctioned human rights violator Alexandre de Moraes continues, as he and other members of Brazil's Supreme Court have unjustly decided to imprison former president Jair Bolsonaro. The United States will respond accordingly to this witch hunt."
The sentence, which doesn't allow appeal before the full STF, represents the latest move by a judicial system colonized by the Workers' Party. Lula, with his history of corruption and imprisonment, now uses the Supreme Court as a repressive arm to shield his power and eliminate the only figure capable of defeating him at the polls.
