What was set to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year on Nintendo Switch 2 ended in frustration: Gearbox has indefinitely delayed the arrival of Borderlands 4 to the console. The release was scheduled for October 3, but the developer announced that it was cancelling all digital pre-orders and that buyers will receive a full refund.
According to the company, the decision was made to polish the final product and ensure that the debut on Switch 2 meets the quality standards of the franchise. The official statement also indicated that the goal is to align the launch with support for cross-play and shared saves, although no concrete technical details were provided regarding the issues facing the adaptation.
Optimization issues causing concern
The delay is not entirely surprising considering that Borderlands 4 was already experiencing performance difficulties on more powerful platforms such as PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. With more than 2.5 million registered players since its release, the title has received criticism for lack of optimization and performance drops.

In this context, releasing the game on Nintendo Switch 2—a console that, while superior to the previous generation, still lags behind the competition in terms of power—posed a high risk to the franchise's reputation. Gearbox chose to halt the release before the issue could become another case of technical failure within the industry.
