Bregman criticized the lowering of the age of criminal responsibility and came out in defense of underage offenders

The communist leader Myriam Bregman criticized the implementation of the new juvenile criminal regime, which lowers the age of criminal responsibility to 14 years, and came out to defend underage offenders.

Through her X account, Bregman published a message in which she criticized both the government of Javier Milei and sectors of the opposition that supported the initiative, describing the reform as a tool aimed at “regimenting and persecuting the youth.”

“Today the new juvenile criminal regime came into effect. Although it may seem impossible, there were people who were elected as opponents, or even progressives, and ended up giving Milei and Bullrich the tools to regiment and persecute the youth,” wrote the leader.

In this regard, Bregman targeted those who supported the reform and accused them of becoming “accomplices” of the government. “They are accomplices of this far-right government, which tightens the screws on working families while advancing with the criminalization of youth and poverty,” she stated.

The message generated questions about the way the leader characterizes the reform. The new regime establishes that adolescents from 14 years old can be subject to a specific juvenile criminal system in case of committing serious crimes and contemplates different responses depending on the offense.

Bregman closed her post with a strong criticism of Milei's government and dismissed the idea that the new legislation could offer a solution: “Nothing good or any solution to the problems can come from there.”

After her message, the communist Bregman was harshly criticized on social media for trying to “victimize” those who commit serious crimes, such as violent robberies or even murders, and who from now on will finally be able to pay for their crimes.

In this context, many people recalled the crime of the girl Kim Gómez, which occurred in February 2025. Gómez, 7 years old, and her mother were in a parked car in front of a supermarket.

Two armed criminals approached them to steal the vehicle. The mother was forcibly removed, but the girl was trapped in the back seat, tied by the seatbelt, and ended up being dragged for nearly two kilometers along the asphalt, which caused her death.

The perpetrators were two adolescents aged 17 and 14 years at the time of the incident. The latter was deemed not criminally responsible due to his age under the previous law.

The leader's stance places the Argentine left in a position that is outright opposed to the juvenile criminal reform and common sense.

While Milei's government seeks to establish responsibilities for crimes committed by adolescents, Bregman came out to denounce a "persecution of youth" and the "most vulnerable" sectors.
