Cerúndolo reached the round of 16 in the Miami Masters 1000

The Argentine defeated the local Tommy Paul in 1 hour and 31 minutes of play

Francisco Cerúndolo made it to the round of 16 of the Miami Open againafter defeating local Tommy Paul 6-2, 7(7)-6(4) in an hour and a half match. With this solid performance, the Argentine marks his third appearance among the top 16 in four participations, in one of these, 2022, he managed to reach the semifinals.

From the start, Cerúndolo showed great form, hitting 17 winners and closing the first set with a streak of 12 consecutive points. In the second set, he seemed on track for victory after securing a double break, but the American, currently ranked No. 13, replied, regained consistency, and strung together four consecutive games.

The match was decided in the tie-break, where the Argentine once again showed his best form, placing tight shots on the lines and adding winners. He started with four consecutive points and closed the match with the same decisiveness with which he began. With this victory, he extended his dominance over Paul, with a record of 5 wins and 2 losses.

"I was playing unbelievable tennis and got a bit passive… but I played a great tie-break and I'm happy", analyzed Fran Cerúndolo after the match. It should be noted that "Rulo" is the only Argentine still in competition in this Masters Series tournament after Camilo Ugo Carabelli's elimination against Novak Djokovic in the round of 32 by 6-1, 7(6)-6(1).

"I've worked a lot in the preseason. I started the year well and I'm looking for confidence, going week by week, calmer and more consistent on the court", added the Argentine tennis player.

Next stop: Casper Ruud

The Norwegian, fifth seed and currently ranked No. 6 in the ATP ranking, advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Chilean Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 7(7)-6(4) with a dominant serve that allowed him to win five points on his first serve and save all three break opportunities from his opponent. Additionally, he hit 11 aces, something Cerúndolo will need to be very mindful of for their match this Wednesday at 12:30 PM, Argentina time.
