CGT in crisis: Kirchnerist unionism challenges the majority leadership
Kirchnerists are calling for a parallel meeting in the PJ, while a barbecue with 150 CGT leaders is being held simultaneously
The design of the futureCGT faces an unprecedented scenario of tension this Wednesday: meanwhile, the majority sector of the labor union plans to gather around 150 leaders at a "camaraderie" barbecue in Ezeiza at noon to launch the election of new authorities, the Kirchnerist union leadership has called for a parallel meeting at 6:00 p.m. at the Buenos Aires PJ headquarters with the aim of setting themselves apart and demanding that "a project be discussed before a change of names."
The majority sector, which includes "los Gordos" (Sanidad and Comercio, currently divided), the independents (UPCN, UOCRA, and Obras Sanitarias), the Moyano faction (Camioneros), the Barrionuevo faction (Gastronómicos, service stations, Cargo and Unloading, Maestranza), and a group of allies (UDA, Judiciales, and Alimentación), is consolidating the proposal to maintain the triumvirate structure in CGT. Names such as Cristian Jerónimo (glass workers), Jorge Sola (insurance), and Maia Volcovinsky (judicial workers) are circulating as possible members.

Meanwhile, the Kirchnerists, led by Abel Furlán (UOM), Ricardo Pignanelli (SMATA), and Sergio Palazzo (bank workers), are demanding a debate on a project to support the future CGT before defining its members, with the aim of ensuring a critical stance toward Javier Milei's government. In the UOM corridors, some of the union leaders proposed by the CGT leadership are being questioned, with one being labeled as "Paolo Rocca's chosen one", president of Grupo Techint.
The standoff became evident with the two different calls. Hugo Moyano (Camioneros), Héctor Daer (Sanidad), Gerardo Martínez (UOCRA), Andrés Rodríguez (UPCN), and Luis Barrionuevo (Gastronómicos) will attend the meal in Ezeiza, while Furlán, Pignanelli, Palazzo, Guillermo Moser (Luz y Fuerza), and Norberto Di Próspero (legislative staff) will attend the PJ meeting. The participant count will symbolically indicate "who won" the union standoff.

Those around Furlán are seeking support for his candidacy as the sole head of CGT at the congress on November 5 in Parque Norte, while his rivals, confident in their dominance, downplay the offensive: "If they have enough numbers, let them present a list to see who will vote for them," said leaders of the majority sector.
On Thursday, the Kirchnerists will attend the CGT Executive Council at 3:00 p.m. to formally approve the electoral schedule, while the Central Confederal Committee will meet on September 18 for the official call to the congress that will renew authorities until 2029.
