Changes for the Clausura: VAR decisions will be communicated to the public, and there will be no more ball boys.

These measures were announced at AFA's referees' Media Day and they will seek to speed up the game and make it fairer.

With the 2025 Clausura Tournament around the corner, new changes have been announced to make soccer more agile and "fair": referees will inform the public in the stadium of the decisions made by the VAR and there will be no more ball boys.

The announcements were made this Thursday by Federico Beligoy and Fernando Rapallini during the Media Day arbitral at the AFA. The implementation of the first measure will not be immediate at the debut, since technical details are missing in some stadiums, so it is expected to be put into use on the third or fourth matchday.

Related to this, a unidirectional Twitter channel will also be created to disseminate technical considerations on refereeing errors, both audio and video.

Regarding the end of the ball boys, they will be replaced by 12 balls distributed on cones to speed up the resumption of the game.

Meanwhile, during the meeting, decisions from the Apertura Tournament were reviewed and new projects were presented, such as a Young Talents program divided into two phases to renew and lower the average age of the referees who reach the LPF.

Another thing that was reported was the purchase of licenses for digital platforms that will allow planning and developing refereeing, along with neurocognitive training to optimize the performance of the current panel of judges.

Finally, general concepts of refereeing and the regulations were reinforced, highlighting above all:

  • Improving the effective playing time (for example, enforcing the 8-second rule for goalkeepers)
  • Quick attention to injured players (with their pertinent time compensation)
  • Respect for the regulatory distance in game restarts
  • Compliance with the captains' zone
  • Management of the substitutes' benches and behavior of the technical staff
