What was supposed to become an unforgettable celebration for the fans of the New York Knicks ended up transforming into a night of chaos and disorder in the streets of New York. The historic NBA conquest, the first for the franchise since 1973, was partially overshadowed by the riots, acts of vandalism, and clashes with the police that were recorded for several hours in various parts of Manhattan.
The euphoria erupted after the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 and sealed the final series 4-1 to achieve the third championship in their history. As soon as the result was confirmed, thousands of people took to the streets to celebrate an achievement that several generations of fans had never witnessed, massively occupying the surroundings of Madison Square Garden, Times Square, and other iconic areas of the city.
However, as the night progressed, the celebrations began to lose their festive tone. Videos circulated by U.S. media and social networks showed groups of fans climbing on vehicles, damaging urban furniture, throwing objects, and setting off fireworks in the midst of completely congested avenues.
One of the most shocking episodes occurred near the Port Authority terminal, where several buses became trapped among the crowd. Some protesters climbed onto the vehicles, broke parts of their structure, and caused significant damage. One of the buses ended up on fire, generating images that quickly went around the world.
The violence also reached the security forces. In various sectors of Manhattan, attacks against patrol cars, stampedes, and clashes with New York Police Department (NYPD) officers were reported, who had to deploy riot units and mounted officers to try to regain control of the streets.
