OpenAI's CEO and ChatGPT creator, Sam Altman, celebrated the announcement of the Stargate Argentina project this Friday: a mega investment of USD 25,000 million that will transform Patagonia into a global hub for artificial intelligence. The initiative will be developed in partnership with Sur Energy, a company founded by Argentine entrepreneur Mat Travizano, who tragically passed away a few weeks ago in a mountaineering accident in California.
During the statement, Altman highlighted President Javier Milei's leadership and the strategic vision that enabled OpenAI's entry into Latin America. "When I met President Milei during his visit to San Francisco last year, his vision of how artificial intelligence could drive Argentina's growth and creativity was unmistakable and solid," said the tech entrepreneur.

The project, named Stargate Argentina, will be the first of its kind in the region. According to Altman, "it's not just about infrastructure but about putting artificial intelligence in the hands of people across Argentina," with the goal of building a robust and competitive ecosystem. The venture will create thousands of skilled jobs and position the country as one of the main technology centers in the Southern Hemisphere.
OpenAI's CEO also paid a heartfelt tribute to Travizano, the driving force behind the alliance with OpenAI. "We wouldn't be making this announcement without his efforts. Mat's vision was about impact, about making sure people could access and benefit from artificial intelligence," he stated. Altman recalled that he met Travizano during Milei's visit to the United States and highlighted his "commitment to unlocking AI's potential to benefit Argentina, Latin America, and the rest of the world."
Altman explained that the project aims to strengthen the national technological infrastructure, with applications ranging from smarter public services to tools that enable small businesses to compete globally. "It reinforces the importance of a strong and diverse artificial intelligence ecosystem," he emphasized.

In his message, he also underscored the rapid adoption of ChatGPT in the country: "Millions of Argentines already use ChatGPT every week. Adoption has more than tripled in the past year, driven by students, startups, and professionals." Altman emphasized that the alliance with Argentina "represents the future of a region full of talent, creativity, and ambition" and that the goal is for every province, classroom, startup, and public institution to have access to world-class artificial intelligence.
"We see a future in which advanced artificial intelligence is accessible to everyone. Stargate Argentina is part of that larger mission. Thank you to everyone who's helping make this happen. We can't wait to see what we'll build together," the entrepreneur concluded.
