The rescue efforts following the devastating earthquakes that shook Venezuela were marked by a tense episode between Diosdado Cabello, Interior Minister and one of the main leaders of Chavismo, and an American rescuer participating in the search for survivors. The incident occurred in La Guaira, where the Chavista minister attempted to halt the operation due to the rescuer's nationality.
The exchange took place as specialized teams were working to locate people trapped under a collapsed building. At that moment, an American rescuer began ordering Cabello "Back up, back up" to clear the perimeter and ensure that the operation could proceed without interference from the minister or additional risks to the victims or emergency personnel.

Cabello responded visibly upset to the instruction and engaged in a verbal exchange with the member of the American team. While they argued, the rest of the rescuers continued to work against the clock to detect signs of life among the rubble using specialized equipment, search dogs, and acoustic sensors.
The episode occurred in a particularly delicate context. After the double earthquake that struck northern Venezuela, the United States deployed one of the largest international humanitarian aid operations sent to the country in decades.
Washington sent urban search and rescue teams, military engineers, doctors, logistical personnel, and specialized machinery to assist in addressing the emergency, in addition to increasing economic assistance aimed at rebuilding the affected areas.
The rescue operations are taking place under extremely complex conditions. Thousands of buildings suffered structural damage and hundreds of properties completely collapsed, forcing teams to work with extreme caution to avoid further collapses. In several locations, rescuers have had to temporarily suspend operations due to aftershocks that continue to occur since the main earthquake.

Meanwhile, the official death toll continues to rise and thousands of people remain housed in temporary shelters. Teams from various countries are working alongside firefighters, civil protection, and Venezuelan volunteers to locate the missing, provide medical care, and distribute food, drinking water, and medications in the most affected areas.
The clash between Cabello and the American rescuer quickly went viral on social media and was widely reported by international media. For many observers, the episode reflected the enormous tension surrounding rescue efforts amid an unprecedented humanitarian tragedy, where every minute is crucial to finding people alive among the rubble.
