Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the United States to maintain “stability” in bilateral ties and warned that the question of Taiwan represents the main source of tension between the two powers, during a telephone conversation with the Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The exchange took place a few weeks after President Donald Trump's official visit to Beijing, where he is scheduled to meet with his counterpart Xi Jinping on May 14 and 15
.According to the Chinese government statement, Wang emphasized the need to “safeguard the hard-won stability” in the bilateral relationship, as well as to properly prepare for upcoming high-level meetings.
Healso raised the advisability of expanding areas of cooperation, although he insisted that differences must be managed without affecting China's fundamental interests. In this context, he reiterated that Taiwan constitutes a “red line”, describing it as the “greatest risk point” in the relationship
with Washington.
Beijing maintains that the island is part of its territory and has intensified its diplomatic and military pressure in recent years, while openly criticizing US support for Taipei. The United States, for its part, maintains its support for Taiwan in terms of defense and international presence, which generates constant friction. From Washington, these warnings are seen as attempts to impose unilateral conditions that could upset the balance in the Asia-Pacific region
.The Trump administration has responded to this scenario with a firm foreign policy, aimed at strengthening strategic alliances and containing the expansion of Chinese influence in key sectors. U.S. officials believe that Beijing's stance on Taiwan not only increases geopolitical risk, but also calls into question its commitment to the regional stability it
claims to defend. In addition to the Taiwan issue, the conversation between Wang and Rubio included an exchange about the situation in the Middle East. Although no specific details were offered, the dialogue takes place in a context marked by the recent escalation in Iran, where the United States acted decisively with Israel.
