There are concerns about Locomotora Oliveras's health: she is hospitalized after a stroke.

The former boxer remains in intensive care with left hemiplegia and a guarded prognosis after a stroke

Alejandra "Locomotora" Oliveras's health keeps the sports world on edge. The former boxer was urgently admitted this Monday after suffering an ischemic stroke and remains in intensive care at José María Cullen Hospital in Santa Fe.

Medical staff at the center confirmed that Oliveras is experiencing left-sided hemiplegia and continues in a confused state. Her level of consciousness is altered and she isn't fully responding to stimuli, according to Bruno Moroni, the hospital's director.

The next few hours will be decisive

Moroni explained that the first 48 hours after the stroke are crucial for evaluating the patient's response to treatment. Although he clarified that the boxer remains stable, he warned that the situation requires extreme care.

One encouraging detail was that Oliveras doesn't require mechanical respiratory assistance. However, the official medical report indicated that her condition remains guarded and that it still isn't possible to estimate the degree of long-term aftereffects the episode might leave her with.

What is an ischemic stroke and how does it affect people?

The stroke suffered by Oliveras is of the ischemic type, the most common among strokes. It accounts for around 80% of cases and occurs when a cerebral artery becomes blocked, usually by a clot. This interrupts the flow of blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the brain, which can cause irreversible neurological damage.

The most frequent symptoms include paralysis on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, vision loss, severe headache, and confusion. In older adults, it can even present solely as disorientation or incoherent speech.

Specialists emphasize that, with treatment and rehabilitation, it is possible to recover part or all of the affected mobility. In Locomotora's case, her age and previous good physical condition could work in her favor during the recovery process.

For now, her future is uncertain, and attention is focused on her clinical progress over the next few hours.
