Córdoba: Albareda, the K militant from the HIJOS group, confessed that he had killed his mother

The perpetrator of a horrendous crime is being held in a provincial prison. He strangled her, struck her with a stone, stabbed her with a knife, and attempted to burn the body

Fernando Albareda, the activist from the H.I.J.O.S. group confessed that he murdered his mother, Susana Montoya.

From Bower prison in Córdoba, Albareda made a confession to the newspaper La Voz del Interior, which released a video interview.

His mother was going to receive 76 million pesos (167,551,000 pounds) for the reconstruction of the police record of her ex-husband and Fernando's father, Ricardo Fermín Albareda, who died during the dictatorship.

"I grabbed a rope, wrapped it around her neck, and strangled her", he told La Voz.

"I don't know if I'm sorry. I don't know if I did the right thing. I don't know," he added afterwards.

In a sort of explanation or mitigating factor, Albareda stated that as a child things happened to him "that don't happen to an ordinary person".

"The disappearance of his father during the dictatorship; beatings from his maternal grandfather; his admission to a juvenile institution; sexual assaults by a teacher; the discovery of the brutal torture that preceded his father's death just before the trial that led to the conviction of former Third Army Corps leader Luciano Benjamín Menéndez and a D2 police squad; suspicions about the role his mother played in handing his father over to his killers," the Córdoba newspaper reports.

His lawyers will request a change in the legal classification of the case.

Albareda offered an apology to his fellow activists, who supported him after the murder and called for an investigation into the police forces for a possible political crime.

"I apologize to each of the people who make up the different movements and organizations, because even though this is my own act, I feel that I let them down," he said.

Susana Montoya's murder: Chronicle of a brutal night

On the night of August 1, 2024, Susana Beatriz Montoya (74) was found dead in the yard of her home in the Poeta Lugones neighborhood, Córdoba.

The autopsy indicated strangulation, blows to the head with a brick, and a stab wound to the neck. The killer also tried to burn the body and left a threatening message written in lipstick.

Her son Fernando Albareda (53), activist from the HIJOS group and former provincial delegate of the Secretariat of Human Rights, reported the incident as a "parapolice" revenge, but cameras showed him entering and leaving the residence, there were no signs of forced entry, and the intimidating phrase turned out to be in his own handwriting.

He was arrested on August 8, 2024, and charged with aggravated homicide due to kinship, premeditation, and greed.

The prosecution pointed to a dispute over $76 million (167,551,000 pounds) in state compensation for the forced disappearance of Ricardo Fermín Albareda, the accused's father, who was kidnapped in 1979.

Montoya, who was handling the payment, had reportedly decided to allocate most of it to her other son, which triggered the conflict.

Prosecutor Juan Pablo Klinger ordered pretrial detention and, on May 28, 2025, referred the case to trial. Albareda will face a possible life sentence for aggravated homicide.

Handwriting and psychological expert reports reinforce the accusation, describing him as manipulative and narcissistic.
