The Crystal Palace continues to fill its trophy cabinet. The English team defeated Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in Leipzig and was crowned champion of the Conference League, thus achieving its first international title in one of the most remarkable stages of its history.
During the first half, caution prevailed. The Vallecas team attempted to take the lead with ball possession, while the London team opted to wait organized and strike on the counterattack taking advantage of the speed of their forwards.
In that scenario, the clearest chances were for the London team, although without much precision. The most dangerous came with a header from Tyrick Mitchell that went just wide, while the Spanish team resisted and sought to stay in the match.
The match changed just after the start of the second half. Adam Wharton tried from outside the box and Augusto Batalla managed to clear, but left a short rebound that Jean-Philippe Mateta took advantage of inside the area to push the ball and score the 1-0.
The goal hit Rayo's morale, and Crystal Palace was very close to extending the lead. First with an incredible free kick from Yéremi Pino that hit the posts and went out, and then with another clear chance for Mateta that found a great response from the Argentine goalkeeper.
As the minutes passed, Íñigo Pérez's team reacted and sought the equalizer more out of determination than football clarity. Although they could push towards the end, they never seriously troubled Dean Henderson, who kept his goal intact for Crystal Palace to become the new champion of the Conference League.
In this way, the London club lifted the first European trophy in its history and added its third in the last two years (FA Cup 2024/25, Community Shield 2025, and now Conference League 2025/26), thus consolidating the most successful cycle since its foundation. Additionally, the team where Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benítez currently plays secured a direct ticket to the next Europa League.
On the other hand, for Rayo Vallecano, where besides Batalla was the albiceleste Óscar Trejo, there remains the recognition for an unforgettable campaign that led them to play in the first continental final in their history, although without being able to crown it with the coveted title.
