For the first time in decades, Buenos Aires Province ended the year 2025 with more deaths than births, consolidating a negative population balance that reflects a sharp collapse in the birth rate.
According to official data from the Provincial Registry of Persons, during the twelve months of last year 120,138 births were recorded in Buenos Aires territory. This figure represents a 9% drop compared with 2024, when 131,186 births had been recorded, and an even more pronounced decrease of 55% compared with 2020, a year in which 186,588 people were born.
In contrast with this collapse in births, the number of deaths remained high. During 2025 approximately 133,900 people died in the province. This difference between births and deaths caused a negative demographic balance of around 13,800 people, confirming that the population shrank naturally as a direct consequence of this trend.

The central figure that shows the magnitude of the phenomenon is that, during the last year, the number of deaths far exceeded the number of births. This scenario reflects a deep transformation in the population dynamics of the country's largest and most populous province, which could be mirrored in other regions.
