A detainee attacked a judge during a hearing in Cipolletti and fractured his finger.
The assailant was arrested; he also assaulted two police officers and intimidated the prosecutor and his public defender
An act of extreme violence took place at the Cipolletti Courthouse, Río Negro, when a man in custody attacked and injured a Guarantees Judge during a judicial hearing. The assailant threw objects at the magistrate, fracturing his finger, and also assaulted his public defender, the prosecutor, and two police officers.
The incident occurred on Sunday during a charge formulation hearing against a man identified as Velozo, who had been arrested the previous day after causing disturbances in a parish. During his arrest, he had already struck two officers: one received a punch and another ended up with a sprained finger.
The detainee was homeless and had a criminal record
According to judicial sources, the accused was homeless and had a criminal record for thefts, in addition to issues related to addictions. For these acts, he was charged with "resisting authority and causing injuries."
During the hearing, which was recorded by the court's security cameras, Velozo demanded that one of the police officers who had arrested him be presented, but he was explained that this was not the appropriate procedural stage for that request.
The assailant threw objects and threatened judicial staff
It was then that the detainee threw a plastic cup of water at Judge Juan Martín Brussino Kain, who immediately suspended the hearing and ordered his transfer. However, the man ripped out a microphone and threw it at the magistrate, causing a fracture in one of his fingers.
While being restrained, Velozo also insulted and threatened his own public defender, Marta Ghiani, and the prosecutor Rubén Negro, with phrases like: "I'll find you outside."
This Monday, a new hearing was held, although the assailant decided not to participate. Nonetheless, the process proceeded without issues, and Judge Brussino Kain ordered preventive detention for two months, citing risk of flight and obstruction of the case, as the accused doesn't have a fixed address.
Additionally, physical and psychological evaluations were ordered, while Prosecutor Negro initiated a new case for the crimes of "assaulting authority, causing injuries, and making threats." Statements from eyewitnesses have already been received, and a report was submitted to Prosecutor's Office No. 4.
