Blizzard confirmed during BlizzCon 2026 the development of Diablo V, the most ambitious installment of its action role-playing saga. Far from following the thread of its predecessor, the company opted for a radically different setting: a devastated Sanctuary where the forces of Hell dominate almost the entire territory and humanity is on the brink of extinction.
The central premise raises the question of what happens when the Lord of Terror conquers Sanctuary. This starting point justified discarding a simple expansion of Diablo 4. According to the project leaders, the scale of the planned innovations, especially the incorporation of a procedural world, made it impossible to frame the title within the previous installment.
The release is scheduled for spring 2029. In the meantime, the company has already hinted at the keys to an experience that seeks to break with the usual patterns of the series.

Joe Shely, senior game director, explained in an interview with TechRadar how the narrative is structured. The campaign is divided into three stories differentiated by their temporal framework, designed to function interconnectively within a single experience.
Past, present, and future in a single campaign
The first story is set in the past and narrates the fall of Sanctuary: the moment when the infernal hosts conquer the territory. The second takes place in the present and places the player in that ravaged world, where Hell controls practically every corner of the map.
The third line takes the action into the future and focuses on the main mechanical novelty of the title. Shely did not delve into the details of each arc, but made it clear that all three are designed to interact with each other and provide a complete view of the tragedy that permeates the setting.
