The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, said he is willing to meet with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, to sign a” great agreement” between the two countries, provided that it is prepared in advance at a technical level and contemplates the interests of both parties. The statement was made during an interview with the Russian network “RT”, whose excerpts were released recently.
According to Lukashenko, Minsk and Washington are already holding preliminary talks on various issues, although he avoided specifying the specific points under discussion. The president stressed that the possible agreement should not be limited to the lifting of sanctions imposed by the West, but should encompass a broader agenda of cooperation. “We are ready for an agreement, but it must be prepared in a way that reflects the interests of both the United States and Belarus,” he said.
The Belarusian leader also made it clear that a personal meeting with Trump is not an objective in itself, although he acknowledged that he would be willing to make it happen once the technical negotiations have progressed sufficiently. In that regard, he indicated that the timetable will depend on how quickly both parties manage to resolve their differences

The statements come in a context of possible diplomatic efforts driven by the Trump environment. In March, his envoy, John Coale, suggested that Lukashenko could visit the United States in the near future. If it materialized, this trip would represent a significant shift in foreign policy towards Belarus, whose president has been subject to international isolation for years due to allegations of human rights violations and his alignment
In this scenario, analysts interpret Lukashenko's recent statements as an attempt to reposition Belarus on the geopolitical board, seeking a balance between its dependence on Russia and the need to alleviate international pressure. The possibility of an agreement with Washington could offer Minsk new economic and political opportunities, without necessarily breaking its strategic ties with Moscow.
The relationship between Putin and Lukashenko has been one of the biggest limitations to the normalization of relations between Belarus and the United States.
In parallel, Lukashenko has insisted on strengthening the country's internal security. At the beginning of April, after an exhaustive review of the armed forces, he summoned some 300 senior military commanders and raised the need to mobilize the population in the face of an increasingly uncertain international environment. The president warned of external risks and defended the country's preparation to guarantee its stability and survival
.
The Belarusian president also referred to the role of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), urging the bloc to adopt a more diplomatic stance in its relations with Armenia, in the midst of internal tensions within the alliance. This call reflects Minsk's intention to preserve regional cohesion while facing challenges stemming from the conflict in Ukraine and Western pressure

So far, Washington has not officially reacted to Lukashenko's statements nor has it confirmed concrete progress towards a possible bilateral agreement. However, his words open the door to a possible change in the dynamics between the two countries, conditioned by political, military and strategic factors still under development.
