Stranger Than Heaven was one of the big surprises of the Summer Game Fest 2026, but also one of the most controversial announcements. The reason was the confirmation that a character inspired by Tupac Shakur will have a significant role in the new video game developed by RGG Studio.
After the criticism that arose on social media, the studio's executive director, Masayoshi Yokoyama, came out to explain the decision and assured that both the family and the legal representatives of the rapper's legacy approved his participation in the project.

Why Tupac's presence generated controversy
Tupac's appearance drew attention because the artist was murdered in 1996 and has been deceased for nearly three decades.
However, RGG Studio clarified that the character will not be exactly Tupac playing himself. It is a character that uses his physical likeness, but will have a completely new voice performed by a real actor without the intervention of artificial intelligence.
The decision sparked debates among players and fans of the musician, especially due to the legal disputes that have existed in recent years surrounding the management of his legacy.
The response from the director of Stranger Than Heaven
In an interview with IGN, Yokoyama explained that the studio worked directly with the representatives of Tupac's estate and with members of his family before moving forward with the project.
According to him, they not only received authorization to use the artist's likeness, but also shared details about the role he would have within the story.

The developer assured that the goal was to pay tribute to the rapper and avoid any representation that could be disrespectful to his family or fans.
A precedent that has already occurred in the saga
Yokoyama recalled that this is not the first time RGG Studio has incorporated the likeness of a deceased figure in one of its games.
Previously, the studio used the appearance of legendary Japanese actor Bunta Sugawara to bring the character Genzo Iwaki to life. In that case, they also sought authorization from the family and the legal environment of the artist before proceeding with development.

According to the director, the process followed with Tupac was practically the same.
No artificial intelligence to recreate the voice
One of the most notable aspects of the explanation was the decision not to use AI tools to mimic the rapper's voice.
Without artificial intelligence to recreate the voice
The studio opted to hire an actor to portray the character and provide a unique identity. The intention was to avoid a simple imitation and build an original personality inspired by Tupac's figure.
Yokoyama stated that RGG Studio has always prioritized acting work and that this philosophy remains fundamental in their productions.
"We cannot create games thinking about avoiding criticism"
The director also acknowledged that he expected negative reactions after the announcement. Nevertheless, he defended the creative decision and stated that a developer's goal is not to avoid questioning, but to create experiences capable of moving and surprising players.

"If we made decisions solely to avoid criticism, we would end up creating something incapable of making an impact," he summarized.
When is Stranger Than Heaven coming out
At the moment, the exact extent of the character inspired by Tupac within the story is not known.
What is confirmed is that he will share scenes with a character based on Snoop Dogg, known as Orpheus, a smuggler looking to make a name for himself in Japan.
