Donald Trump endorsed Jair Bolsonaro and denounced political persecution in Brazil.
The President of the United States expressed his strong support for Bolsonaro and criticized Lula's government for being authoritarian
In a message published on his social media, United States President Donald Trump issued a forceful statement in defense of Jair Bolsonaro, former Brazilian president who is currently being persecuted by the government of the socialist Lula da Silva.
Trump described Bolsonaro as a victim of a "witch hunt" driven by Lula, and stated that Brazil is making a "grave mistake" by prosecuting, without cause, the former Brazilian president and his supporters.
"I have watched, just like the world, how they've done nothing but persecute him, day after day, night after night, month after month, year after year!" Trump wrote in his message. "He's not guilty of anything except having fought for the people," he added, in a clear defense of the Brazilian leader.

Trump also praised Bolsonaro as "a strong leader who truly loved his country" and as a tough negotiator in trade matters. The message comes amid an escalation of legal actions in Brazil against the former president, his family, and dozens of supporters, accused without evidence of having promoted an "attempted coup d'état" in the last presidential elections.
For Trump, and for millions of people, the background of these investigations is purely political: "This is nothing more than an attack on a political opponent, something I know a lot about!" he stated, alluding to his own legal battles in the United States. "I'll be watching Jair Bolsonaro's witch hunt, his family, and thousands of his supporters very closely," he warned.
Trump's support is significant, as it comes at a time of growing institutional tension in Brazil, where Lula's government is attempting to ban Bolsonaro ahead of the upcoming elections. Currently, the former president leads all voting intention polls for 2026.

Meanwhile, Lula da Silva's government keeps a discourse focused on the "defense of democracy," while consolidating an authoritarian advance that seeks to eliminate any opposition figure with a real chance of contesting power. The political disqualification of Bolsonaro, along with legal cases against his family and supporters, demonstrates that there is an essential use of justice for electoral and authoritarian purposes.
"The only trial there should be is that of the Brazilian voters. It's called an election," Trump stated in his message, concluding with a strong phrase: "LEAVE BOLSONARO ALONE!"
The intervention of the United States president once again internationalizes the political debate in Brazil and fuels the claims of thousands of citizens who denounce a systematic persecution against the main figure of the Brazilian right. In this context, the accusations against Bolsonaro not only divide the country, but also raise concerns about the democratic direction under Lula's administration.
