The Egyptian was at the center of a scandal after being sanctioned by the referee and questioning the decision following the humiliating defeat against Argentina

In a thrilling match held in Atlanta for the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, the Argentine national team achieved an epic comeback by winning 3-2 against Egypt. However, the discordant note of the day came from the pro-Hamas Islamic coach, Hossam Hassan, who staged an embarrassing outburst of fury against the French referee François Letexier after being rightfully cautioned in the final minutes of the match.

The Egyptian coach, unable to accept the elimination, resorted to a gesture laden with ulterior motives. Upon receiving the yellow card, Hassan crossed his arms forming an “X” in the air, a gesture that, according to the rules, is used to denounce a “racist insult” from an opponent.

Hassan's fury was primarily unleashed by the correct intervention of the VAR, which disallowed what would have been Egypt's second goal. Referee Letexier determined, after reviewing the footage, that there was a clear “stomp on Lisandro Martínez” at the start of the play, a decisive foul that caused the Albiceleste to lose possession.

In response, the defeated coach shot without evidence at a press conference: “We have suffered an injustice” and cynically claimed that “pressure has been exerted on the referee by the Argentine team”.

In his eagerness to undermine the Argentine victory, Hassan resorted to conspiracy theories against FIFA, arguing that the result was influenced by commercial interests.

“Maybe they want the world champion and Messi to stay in the World Cup for marketing purposes”, he explosively stated. He even criticized the timing of the match at noon, claiming that the decision was made by “someone who has never played football”.

The reaction in Argentina was swift in response to what was seen as an attempt to tarnish a legitimate victory. Figures like the host of Carajo, Gordo Dan, celebrated the elimination of the Muslim team from Egypt and directly targeted the pro-Hamas Islamic coach, tragically recalling the context of violence in the Middle East with the phrase: “Take..., this is for Aisha who was 6 years old!”.

Despite Hassan's attempts to present himself as a victim —declaring to be “proud to be Arab” but complaining about not receiving the deserved treatment— the reality is that the Argentine national team overturned a two-goal deficit and secured their qualification on the field, exposing the lack of sportsmanship of a coach who preferred political scandal over professional self-criticism.
