CABA 2025 electoral ban: what's prohibited and when it takes effect

Find out what things are prohibited during the electoral ban in CABA and what penalties apply if violated

The next Sunday, May 18, the legislative elections in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires will take place. On that day, 30 seats in the Buenos Aires Legislature will be renewed.

More than 2.5 million people are eligible to vote, and the Electronic Single Ballot system will be used again.

When does the electoral ban start in CABA?

The electoral ban begins on Friday, May 16 at 8:00. From that moment, various restrictions established by law apply.

The sale of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited from 20:00 on Saturday, May 17 until three hours after the polls close.

What things will be prohibited during the ban?

Article 71 of the National Electoral Code establishes a series of restrictions to ensure the normal development of the elections.

Main prohibitions during the ban

  • Meetings of voters or presence of weapons in homes near (80 meters) polling stations.
  • Public shows, parties, or sporting events during the election day and up to 3 hours after.
  • Acts of proselytism, dissemination of surveys and polls, from 48 hours before until the polls close.
  • Opening of party premises within a radius of 80 meters from the polling place.
  • Taking photos of the Electronic Single Ballot inside the voting booth.
  • Publication of surveys or projections of results during the election and up to three hours after the close.

When does the electoral ban end?

The electoral ban ends on Sunday, May 18 at 21:00, that is, three hours after the official close of the polls.

What happens if the electoral ban is broken?

Breaking the ban constitutes an infraction of the Electoral Code. Penalties vary depending on the type of offense.

  • Fines of $10,000 to $100,000 for common offenders.
  • Imprisonment of 15 days to 6 months for selling alcohol during the ban.
  • Up to 15 days of imprisonment for those carrying weapons or party insignia during the election day.
  • Groups that campaign during the ban lose the right to receive subsidies and public contributions for 1 to 4 years.

What happens if I don't vote in CABA?

Voting is mandatory for all citizens between 18 and 70 years old. Failing to comply with this obligation can bring legal and administrative consequences.

  • Fines of $50 to $500 if the absence is not justified before the Electoral Justice within 60 days.
  • Inability to carry out official procedures for one year, such as obtaining a passport.
  • Disqualification from holding public office for three years.

When are the national legislative elections?

The national legislative elections will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025. Positions in the National Congress will be renewed.

What is elected at the national level?

  • 130 national deputies, representing all provinces and CABA.
  • 24 national senators, corresponding to 8 provinces, renewing one-third of the Senate.

The terms of deputies are 4 years, while those of senators last 6 years.
