Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik officially announced her candidacy for the 2026 New York gubernatorial election, challenging current Democratic incumbent Kathy Hochul.
In a message posted on social network X, Stefanik described Hochul as "the worst governor in the United States" and asserted that under her administration, New York has become "the most inaccessible and expensive state to live in across the nation." Her announcement marks the beginning of a political contest that promises to be one of the most intense and high-profile in the state in the coming years.
Elise Stefanik, 41 years old, represents New York's 21st district, a vast region covering the northern part of the state, since her first election to Congress in 2014.

Throughout her career, Stefanik has stood out for her energy, discipline, and steadfast defense of conservative values. In a short time, she has established herself as one of the most influential figures within the Republican Party, due to her strong loyalty to her principles and a pragmatic vision for New York's future.
A loyal ally of President Donald Trump, Stefanik became nationally known for her vigorous defense during his first impeachment trial in 2019. Her courage in facing media and political pressure in Washington earned her recognition even among moderate sectors of the party, who value her determination, strategic intelligence, and communication skills.
During Trump's second term, the president considered her for the position of ambassador to the United Nations, a sign of the trust he placed in her leadership, although the nomination was withdrawn to preserve the Republican balance in the House of Representatives.
