Democratic division grows: New York's governor distances herself from communist Mamdani
Democrat Kathy Hochul has repeatedly refused to support the communist candidate for the New York City mayoral race
Even New York's ultra-Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul, has refused to publicly endorse her party's candidate for New York City mayor, the self-declared communist Zohran Mamdani.
During an interview on Fox News, Hochul avoided committing to Mamdani, limiting herself to stating only that she is available to work with "whoever the voters choose," a clear sign of her intention to remain on the sidelines in a deeply divisive contest for Democrats.
Mamdani, current state assemblyman for Queens and self-declared communist and democratic socialist, has launched a campaign with a strong progressive, Muslim, and antisemitic focus.

Hochul avoided supporting her party colleague.
Mamdani proposes raising taxes on millionaires and corporations in order to finance socialist policies such as subsidized childcare, free public transportation, the expansion of affordable housing, and state-run supermarkets.
These ideas stand in marked contrast to Hochul's more moderate fiscal stance, who has expressed reservations about the viability of such measures. Despite the differences, the governor acknowledged that Mamdani's message resonates with voters who feel they are not making economic progress.
However, she also emphasized that there are "many areas of disagreement" and avoided saying whether Mamdani is a good candidate, despite the praise he gave her for her anti-Donald Trump role in the disputes over congressional redistricting.

The division prevailing in the Democratic Party.
Meanwhile, former governor Andrew Cuomo, now an independent candidate for mayor, seized the opportunity to attack Mamdani, criticizing him for living in a state-subsidized apartment despite being part of a wealthy family of journalists.
Cuomo even proposed what he called the "Zohran Law," which would limit eligibility for these apartments. The communist candidate's team replied immediately, accusing Cuomo of hypocrisy and of diverting attention.
Mamdani has consolidated a solid bloc of progressive support. Among his main backers are left-wing figures such as senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nydia Velázquez, and City Council President Adrienne Adams. This list reflects a clear division within the Democratic Party between the progressive wing and the more moderate establishment.
