Flood in Santa Fe: it caused dozens of evacuations and class suspensions

The city of Vera is experiencing a climate emergency after recording 400 millimeters (15.75 inches) of rainfall in just a few hours

Heavy rains that battered Santa Fe between Monday night and early Tuesday morning left a critical situation in several areas of the province, especially in the city of Vera, where the meteorological phenomenon resulted in a water emergency with dozens of evacuees, flooded streets, suspension of classes, and an ongoing assistance operation.

As previously forecast by the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the region was under alert for storms of varying intensity, with risk levels ranging from yellow to orange. The most critical moment occurred during the early morning hours, when the intensity of the rainfall exceeded all forecasts.

According to data published by the media outlet Reconquista Hoy, by 2:05 a.m. on Tuesday, more than 395 millimeters (15.55 inches) of accumulated rainfall had already been recorded, an alarming figure that caused the collapse of the urban drainage system and left numerous neighborhoods underwater.

An ambulance tipped over on its side on a street at night with several people watching the scene.

In response to this situation, the Vera Municipality activated the emergency protocol and immediately convened the local Civil Protection Board to coordinate containment and assistance actions. An Evacuation Center was set up at Club Gimnasia, where as of 12:30 a.m., 28 people had been assisted, although the number continues to rise. A direct contact line (3483-490824) was also made available to channel requests for help and organize new evacuations.

The operation includes the collaboration of the Provincial Civil Protection Secretariat and logistical support from the Reconquista Volunteer Firefighters, who traveled to Vera led by their chief, César Romano. Additionally, reinforcements from nearby stations joined to strengthen rescue, drainage, and transportation efforts.

As a direct consequence of the emergency, classes at all educational levels in the city were suspended, a measure that will remain in effect at least until further notice.
