FromSoftware is considering creating a two-player mode in Elden Ring: Nightreign

FromSoftware is considering adding one of the most requested features by the gaming community: a two-player mode

Since its official announcement, Elden Ring: Nightreign has captured the attention of fans due to its multiplayer approach. FromSoftware's spin-off will focus on a cooperative system for three players, something unusual in titles of the genre.

However,  the absence of a dedicated two-player cooperative mode has raised questions within the community. Now, the developer is considering adding it as part of a future post-launch update.

Why isn't there a two-player mode?

The surprise was significant when it was confirmed that Nightreign would not include a two-player mode at the time of its release. According to Junya Ishizaki, the game's director, the decision was due to an oversight during development. "We accept the criticism and acknowledge that it was a mistake we didn't catch in time," the creative lead stated in a recent interview.

The team designed the three-player co-op as the core of the experience, betting on tactical collaboration and a diversity of combat styles. "We didn't anticipate the demand for a dedicated two-player mode. We thought about solo players, but not enough about those who play as a pair," Ishizaki added.

A design focused on strategic cooperation

Despite this initial limitation, Elden Ring: Nightreign will also offer a solid solo experience. The title adapts enemy aggression and behavior according to the number of players in order to avoid unbalancing combat. In addition, it will include a self-resurrection system distributed throughout the map, designed to assist those who face challenges alone.

During the beta,  FromSoftware also adjusted several bosses that had been described as disproportionately difficult, a gesture that demonstrates the studio's openness to listening to player feedback.

FromSoftware responds to the community

The possible addition of the two-player mode was well received. Ishizaki indicated that they are exploring its technical implementation and that, if feasible, it will arrive as part of a post-launch update.  "We want to balance the multiplayer experience without losing the essence of Elden Ring," he concluded.

The game will launch this May 30 on major platforms, and the eyes of the community are on how its multiplayer proposal will evolve.  FromSoftware promises to maintain constant communication with players, which further raises expectations regarding the title's lifespan and its future content.
