After a control operation at the northern Argentine border, National Gendarmerie denied the entry of a long-distance bus carrying several pregnant women from Bolivia who were coming to try to receive free medical care in Argentine hospitals.

The case generated strong repercussions and reignited the debate over the so-called “health tourism,” amid a context of increased migration controls by the Government of Javier Milei.

The episode occurred in the province of Salta, during an inspection carried out by the National Immigration Directorate in conjunction with National Gendarmerie.

During that procedure, authorities detected that several passengers on the bus were in advanced stages of pregnancy and were attempting to enter the country under the category of tourists.

According to reports, during interviews and document verification, some of the women allegedly admitted that their intention was to give birth in public hospitals in Argentina. This situation raised alarms among border agents, as the purpose of the trip did not align with the requirements established for entry as a temporary visitor.

In light of this irregularity, authorities decided to apply the legal figure of “false tourism,” a mechanism used when a foreign citizen declares a travel purpose that does not match reality or the conditions required by current regulations. In this case, it was determined that the passengers did not meet the necessary criteria to enter the country under that status.

As a consequence, the entry was denied and the bus was redirected back to Bolivian territory. The measure was taken after inconsistencies were found, such as the lack of elements that would substantiate a tourist stay, including return tickets, accommodation reservations, or proof of economic solvency, along with the admission that the main objective of the trip was to access the Argentine public health system.

In this context, authorities sought to prevent the misuse of public services by individuals who do not meet the established requirements, such as illegal immigrants.

The case that occurred in Salta thus adds to a series of episodes that highlight immigration policy and the use of Argentine public resources by foreigners, in a scenario where Milei's Government seeks to strengthen control mechanisms at the borders.
