After dominating the final stretch of a race marked by strategy changes and various alternatives, Andrea Kimi Antonelli took the Spanish Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver crossed the finish line ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, who completed the podium, and continues to pull away at the top of the Drivers' Championship.
Right from the start, there were several movements in the first few meters. Norris started from pole and tried to defend against Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton, but the Italian managed to take the lead after cutting the first chicane, although he immediately returned the position. Verstappen also exceeded the limits in that sector and, at Red Bull's instruction, had to give up a position.
As the front runners settled in, the race also began to offer opportunities in the rest of the pack. In this context, Franco Colapinto took advantage of a good start from ninth place and quickly moved up to seventh, after overtaking Liam Lawson and benefiting from the incident between Oscar Piastri and George Russell.
A few laps into the race, Hamilton began to suffer brake problems and ended up retiring in the pits. The British driver's retirement allowed Colapinto to gain one more position, although later Lawson managed to recover ground and overtake the Argentine.
Strategy began to play a crucial role when Lance Stroll stopped on lap 15 and caused a Virtual Safety Car (VSC). Antonelli, Verstappen, Russell, and Colapinto took the opportunity to pit and put on hard tires. Norris, on the other hand, could not take advantage of the neutralization and then suffered a seven-second pit stop that dropped him to fifth place.
While Antonelli remained among the frontrunners, Charles Leclerc temporarily took the lead thanks to his tire strategy. The Ferrari driver stayed on track for a good part of the race, but finally pitted on lap 49, leaving Antonelli back in front and dropping to fourth place.
By then, Verstappen and Norris had already closed in on the Mercedes, although the Italian managed to open a gap of about three seconds in the final laps and managed the lead until the checkered flag. Antonelli ended up winning by four seconds over the Dutchman, while Norris had to settle for third place.
In the battle for points, Colapinto once again showed competitiveness. The Argentine advanced to ninth place after Piastri's pit stop, whom he fiercely defended against for several laps, and then managed to overtake a combative Gabriel Bortoleto to move into eighth. In the final laps, moreover, Pierre Gasly's mandatory pit stop allowed him to gain another position.
Finally, the Buenos Aires native finished seventh and became the best driver outside the top teams. Further back, Piastri finished eighth, while Arvid Lindblad and Nico Hülkenberg rounded out the top ten.
