Gustavo Quinteros and the chance to coach Boca: 'It would be nice to coach a giant'

The head coach had turned down Xeneize before Gago's arrival and is now excited about managing a major club in Argentine soccer

Before Fernando Gago arrived on the bench at Boca,  the management led by Juan Román Riquelme considered Gustavo Quinteros as an option to replace Diego Martínez. However, the coach rejected the proposal, since he was in charge of Vélez Sarsfield.

Over time, and already out of El Fortín, Quinteros himself acknowledged in an interview with Diario Olé thathe received several offers, but he chose to take a vacation after many years of work. Today, his goal is clear: to coach again, but only if an interesting offer appears in Argentine soccer.

"Right now I'd like to wait for something interesting from Argentine soccer. I spent many years working abroad and the idea is to be with my family," the coach explained.

Does he dream of Boca?

Although he already turned down the club from La Ribera once,  Quinteros isn't closing the door on a future experience there. "It would be good to coach one of the giants of Argentine soccer," he said, although he clarified that for now he is calm, waiting for a chance to come up at the end of the year.

The coach also spoke about his present: "I'm really enjoying the vacation. I planned it because I turned down offers to rest and wait for something very important that may come."

His successful spell at Vélez and his tragic experience at Gremio

During the 2024 season, Quinteros coached 51 matches with Vélez: he achieved 28 wins, 14 draws, and 9 losses. In addition, he was champion of the Professional League and runner-up in the Copa de la Liga, Copa Argentina, and Trofeo de Campeones.

Despite coming off a very positive run in Liniers, the situation changed radically when he went to Gremio de Porto Alegre. With only 19 matches in 4 months with the Tricolor Gaúcho, Quinteros had a record of 11 wins, 4 draws, and 4 losses, one of them against the recently promoted Mirassol, which led to his early departure due to poor performance in the Brasileirao.
