The qualification of Germany for the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup was overshadowed by news that hits the team of Julian Nagelsmann hard. Nico Schlotterbeck, one of the pillars of the German defense, suffered a serious injury to his left ankle and will not be able to play again in the tournament.
The 26-year-old center-back was injured during the 2-1 victory against Ivory Coast. The incident occurred in the early minutes of the match when he collided with Amad Diallo and was visibly affected. Although he received medical attention and tried to continue on the field, he struggled to make it to halftime and was replaced by Antonio Rüdiger for the second half.

After the match and before the definitive diagnosis was known, Nagelsmann had expressed his concern. "He has some problem with the medial collateral ligament, I still don't know what. He needs to undergo an MRI. Unfortunately, things don't look good," he stated after the match.
The initial feelings were not encouraging, and the medical tests ultimately confirmed the worst scenario. The confirmation came on Monday through Borussia Dortmund, the club where the defender plays. "Nico Schlotterbeck suffered a medial collateral ligament injury in his left ankle during the German national team's match against Ivory Coast. He will be out for several months for both the DFB and Borussia Dortmund. We are with you, Schlotti!," the German institution published on its social media.
This absence represents a significant problem for Germany. In addition to having been a starter in the two matches played so far, Schlotterbeck was the only left-footed center-back in the squad and a key piece in building from the back. His performance had been outstanding, to the point of scoring one of the goals in the 7-1 rout over Curacaoduring the opening match.
Despite the setback, the defender will remain with the German delegation in the United States for the rest of the competition. Nagelsmann also valued his presence within the group beyond the footballing aspect: "Schlotti will be missed on the field as a standout defender and excellent organizer. We have tried to encourage him. Fortunately, he is a positive person who looks forward."
Looking ahead to the upcoming matches, it seems that Rüdiger will take his place in the defense alongside Jonathan Tah. However, the coach also has alternatives like Malick Thiaw and Waldemar Anton to reassemble a defense that has just lost one of its most important names.
