Pillows end up with yellow stains due to the accumulation of sweat, moisture, and remnants of products we use on our face or hair. Over time, these marks become noticeable, look unappealing, and can even generate unpleasant odors. There is a simple way to restore the original color without resorting to expensive products.

The trick is to act in time and, above all, to pay attention to drying, a step that many people overlook and that ends up being decisive.

During the night, the body releases perspiration and moisture that pass through the pillowcase and reach the inside. These residues oxidize and leave the typical yellowish stains. This is compounded by the natural oils from the skin, creams, makeup, and conditioners that remain on the hair or face.

Therefore, even if a pillowcase is used, after several months of use, the pillow can acquire that yellow tone. It is not just superficial dirt: it is an accumulation that seeps through.

How to remove stains with what you have at home

One of the most effective options combines baking soda and liquid laundry detergent, two products that are almost always available. Before starting, it is essential to check the pillow's label to know if it can be washed in a washing machine and at what temperature.

This information is key, especially for feather, memory foam, or delicate material pillows. If washing is allowed, a small amount of detergent along with baking soda is placed in the washing machine, and the cycle and temperature indicated by the manufacturer are selected.

For localized stains, a paste can be made with baking soda and a little water, applied to the yellow area, and left to act for a few minutes before washing. This directly addresses the problem without damaging the entire filling.

Once the washing is finished, drying is the most important point. The pillow must be completely dry before being used again. Any remaining moisture inside can cause bad odors and damage the filling over time.

Drying, the most common mistake

Whenever the material allows, it is advisable to dry it in a ventilated area and ensure that no moisture remains in the center. Storing a still damp pillow inside the case or in the closet is not recommended: it is one of the quickest ways to ruin the previous work.

To prevent stains from reappearing easily, it is ideal to use a protective cover under the usual pillowcase. This extra barrier reduces direct contact of perspiration and skin oils with the filling.

It also helps to wash the pillowcases frequently and always follow the washing instructions for each pillow. Allowing pillows to air out from time to time, taking them off the bed and letting air circulate, decreases moisture accumulation and lowers the chances of stains reappearing.

With these simple care tips and the use of baking soda and detergent, it is possible to keep pillows in better condition for much longer, without the need to replace them prematurely or spend on special products.
