The commissioner of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), Robert Tucker, submitted his resignation on Wednesday morning, just one day after the election of socialist Zohran Mamdani as the city's new mayor.
The decision marks an abrupt end to Tucker's tenure, who had led the department for over a year and was considered a figure of broad consensus within the outgoing administration.
Tucker, 55 years old, communicated his decision to Mayor Eric Adams, indicating that he will officially leave office on December 19, 2025. In his public statement, the official avoided mentioning the reasons for his resignation, although sources close to him confirmed that the central reason was the anti-Israel hostility of the newly elected mayor, whose radical positions would have been incompatible with the commissioner's convictions.
The outgoing official is a Jewish philanthropist and longtime businessman, founder of the private security firm T&M USA, based in New York and with business ties in Israel.

Paradoxically, the news of his resignation coincided with preparations for an official trip to Israel, where Tucker was scheduled to meet with the country's fire chief, to strengthen cooperation between both institutions.
In his statement, Tucker thanked Adams for the trust placed in him and highlighted the achievements of his administration: "It has been the honor of my life to serve as the 35th Fire Commissioner of New York City. We have reduced fire-related deaths to historic lows and modernized the department." He also promised to ensure an orderly transition before his departure.
Mayor Adams praised Tucker's performance, describing him as a "leader with courage, passion, and commitment to public safety," and recalled that under his leadership "FDNY reached the lowest level of fire deaths in a decade."
However, political attention has focused on Zohran Mamdani, whose election has caused alarm in broad sectors of New York's Jewish community.
La victoria del musulmán radical ha sido vista con alta preocupación por muchos neoyorquinos
During the campaign, the new mayor, 34 years old and a self-proclaimed socialist, refused to recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state, accused Tel Aviv of committing "genocide in Gaza" after the October 7, 2024 Hamas terrorist attack, and even declared that "he would arrest Benjamin Netanyahu if he set foot on New York soil."
These positions, labeled as extremist, have been interpreted as a worrying sign of the ideological direction his administration could take.
When asked about Tucker's resignation, Mamdani avoided responding directly, limiting himself to saying that "he will consider anyone who is committed to working for my administration and to reducing costs for New Yorkers." His distant tone was interpreted as a lack of empathy toward a respected official and a community that feels increasingly marginalized.
Tucker's departure is seen by many as the first sign of internal fracture in the transition to the new government. His exit not only leaves a key position in public safety vacant, but also sends a symbolic message: ideological and religious tensions could mark the beginning of Mamdani's term.
