The Argentine Minister of Economy, Luis "Toto" Caputo, was backed from Washington following his Thursday statement about the new agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

An IMF spokesperson confirmed: "We can confirm that the Managing Director contacted Minister Caputo to discuss the next steps in preparing a new 4-year SAF program, and that the Argentine authorities requested a total financing package of US$20 billion".

That same Thursday, the International Monetary Fund's spokesperson, Julie Kozack, when asked by Argentine journalists, simply stated that the amount will be "significant", without providing further details.

The statement was made during the XXIII Annual Conference on Insurance Regulation and Supervision in Latin America ASSAL IAIS 2025, held at the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange.

Caputo highlighted that the figure will be formally presented once the IMF board advances with the final approval. Meanwhile, Milei's Government is negotiating additional financing packages with the World Bank, the IDB, and the CAF, all freely available, with the same aim of strengthening the reserves.

The minister also detailed that, with the addition of these new contributions, the Central Bank's gross reserves could reach USD 50 billion in the coming months.
