The IMF highlighted Milei's management: 'Argentina went from recession to 5% growth.'
It was said by the director of the organization, Kristalina Georgieva
At the start of the 2025 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, the managing director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, highlighted Argentina as one of the countries that has shown the most progress in economic matters, despite the adverse global context.
In her speech from Washington D.C., the Bulgarian economist praised the structural reforms implemented and the country's fiscal discipline, which —according to her— allowed for the reversal of negative indicators and projected a 5% growth for 2025.
"Growth projections for Argentina for this year: 5%. They may fall slightly due to the global environment, but from a recession to 5%, with inflation from double digits to single digits monthly and, most importantly, poverty from over 50% to less than 40%," Georgieva stated during her intervention.
Progress despite a challenging global scenario
Under the title "Global Economic Outlook and Policy Priorities," Georgieva addressed the challenges countries face in a scenario of global slowdown and geopolitical tensions. She noted that currently 48 countries receive assistance from the IMF, including Argentina, and emphasized the importance of staying the course in terms of macroeconomic adjustments.

The director of the international organization also emphasized that governments must remove barriers to entrepreneurship and innovation and take responsibility for correcting the "self-inflicted damage" that hinders development.
Fiscal discipline, reforms, and social support
One of the aspects most valued by Georgieva was the Argentine government's commitment to fiscal discipline and structural reforms, which —as she explained— has begun to yield concrete results: a drop in monthly inflation to single digits, a reduction in poverty, and improved growth projections.
Additionally, she highlighted the popular support for the measures promoted by the local administration. She assured that "the people see a clear commitment from the government to advance with the necessary reforms," and that this contributes to generating confidence both internally and internationally.

An opportunity in the international context
During the meeting, which also included the participation of international representatives such as the ambassador of Ukraine, Georgieva warned that, although global economic prospects are fraught with uncertainty, countries like Argentina represent examples of resilience.
"Argentina's economic situation is an example of a country that has achieved great progress through structural reforms and fiscal discipline", she concluded.
