The IMF reaffirmed its support for the government after the defeat in the legislative elections.

After the defeat in Buenos Aires Province, the multilateral organization highlighted its cooperation with Argentina

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expressed its support for the national government this Tuesday following the adverse result in the Buenos Aires elections.

Through a statement, the organization's Director of Communications, Julie Kozack, stated that the IMF continues"to work closely"with Argentine authorities in the implementation of the current economic program, thus supporting the measures adopted by the administration of JavierMilei.

"IMF staff are closely engaged with Argentine authorities in the implementation of their program to strengthen stability and improve the country's growth prospects", Kozack said in a post on the social network X.

In the same vein, she added: "We support their commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the program's exchange rate and monetary framework, as well as their continued adherence to the fiscal anchor and the comprehensive deregulation agenda".

The statements mark the first official reaction from the international organization after the elections in the province of Buenos Aires, where the ruling party was unable to prevail. So far, the Fund had avoided making statements, despite media inquiries, even in the face of the government's recent decision to intervene in the market to contain the dollar's exchange rate within the planned floating bands.

The IMF's explicit support represents a sign of confidence in the Milei administration's economic strategy, which has prioritized fiscal discipline, exchange rate stability, and an ambitious deregulation plan as central pillars of its program.

In the latest review, the organization had already shown flexibility by relaxing some targets and postponing reviews, a gesture that demonstrated its willingness to support the ongoing stabilization process.

With this statement, the IMF sends a clear message to both markets and political actors: the government's commitment to structural reforms has international backing and translates into a predictable outlook for the Argentine economy.

The press conference scheduled by the organization for this Thursday will provide further details on the support and the program's outlook.

The Fund's public support not onlystrengthens the government's position in the current political context, but also constitutes an indicator of progress in Argentina's strategy for integration into the global financial system.
