The Iranian president indicated that the capital could be moved from Tehran due to the water and population crises the city is experiencing

The president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, stated on Thursday that the country should move the capital out of Tehran due to growing overpopulation and an increasingly severe water crisis.

According to statements, the head of state maintained that the situation is no longer an optional matter and has become an urgent necessity. Pezeshkian has raised this possibility on several occasions, especially in light of an alarming fact: rainfall in Tehran is at its lowest level in a century.

The president indicated that it is not possible to continue increasing the urban burden on the capital region. "We can develop, but we can't solve its water problem," he stated, emphasizing that the area no longer has the capacity to absorb more population or more construction.

A few weeks ago, Pezeshkian even warned that, if it doesn't rain before winter, Tehran could face an evacuation, although he did not provide details on how a measure of that magnitude would be carried out.

Tehran is located on the southern slopes of the Alborz mountains and experiences hot, dry summers that are usually offset by autumn rains and winter snow.

However, this year the climate situation is unusually critical: the mountain peaks, which are normally covered with snow at this time, remain completely dry. This anomaly exacerbates a long-standing structural problem: demographic pressure and intensive use of water resources.

In the face of scarcity, the government has begun to periodically interrupt the water supply to the nearly 10 million inhabitants of the capital in order to limit consumption. The measure, although necessary from a resource management perspective, has intensified the debate about the future of Tehran as the seat of political power.

Pezeshkian's statements about a possible evacuation or relocation of the capital have caused criticism within the country.

In response, the government later clarified that the president was not proposing an immediate plan, but rather warning the population about the seriousness of the situation.

Meanwhile, the Iranian government announced the launch of cloud seeding operations, a meteorological technique aimed at inducing rainfall, as an attempt to mitigate the water crisis. However, experts have pointed out that this type of intervention usually has limited results and doesn't address the structural problems of water management.

Since last year, Pezeshkian has identified several factors to advocate for moving the capital: traffic congestion, water scarcity, poor resource management, and severe air pollution.
