The Governor held a meeting with Jakob Stausholm to discuss the development of initiatives in the Salar del Hombre Muerto
The governor of Catamarca, Raúl Jalil, held a meeting with Jakob Stausholm, CEO of Rio Tinto, to analyze the progress of the mining projects that the company is carrying out in the Salar del Hombre Muerto, located in the Antofagasta de la Sierra department. During the meeting, future opportunities in the critical minerals sector were also discussed.
Stausholm will leave his position as chief executive officer next August 25, and will be replaced by Simon Trott, the company's current head of the minerals division.
Progress in mining and shared objectives
According to information from Government House, the dialogue focused on the status of the projects that Rio Tinto is promoting in Catamarca, with emphasis on the province's strategic potential for the development of lithium, copper, and other critical minerals.
During the meeting, Jalil highlighted Catamarca's geological strengths and emphasized the need for joint work between the State and the private sector to generate tangible benefits in the communities. In this regard, he expressed gratitude for the company's commitment to local employment, capacity building, and the improvement of community well-being.
Participation of officials and sector representatives
The meeting was also attended by national deputy Silvana Ginocchio and Argentina's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Mariana Plaza. Meanwhile, the mining company was represented by Elias Scafidas, general director, and Margarita Batlle, principal advisor on government relations.
This meeting is part of a series of strategic encounters that Governor Jalil has been holding with companies in the sector. Days ago, he also met with executives from Glencore, another company with interests in mining development in Catamarca.

With high-value natural resources and growing international interest, Catamarca is positioning itself as a key jurisdiction for the mining industry in Argentina.
The coordination between governments, companies, and communities will be essential to ensure sustainable growth with a positive long-term impact.
