In the context of the global deliberations of the 81st General Assembly of the United Nations in New York, the powers of the free world have outlined a clear course to counter transnational organized crime, terrorism, and the interference of extraterritorial powers in the West. The nerve center of international diplomacy took place in Room 6 of the UN headquarters with the extraordinary session of “Shield of the Americas”, a summit designed by the United States to combat drug cartels associated with China and Iran.
Although participation was scheduled for 2:30 PM (one hour later in Argentina) through Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the geopolitical significance led President Javier Milei and Donald Trump to directly lead the conclave. The Republican leader attended backed by a high-level delegation including Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and National Security Advisor Stephen Miller.
During his 15 minutes in the chamber, Donald Trump delivered a continuous 5-minute speech in which he celebrated the ideological shift to the right and supported the libertarian government exclaiming just a few meters from Javier Milei: “We had a great victory in Argentina, and not so long ago twice”.
Describing the meeting as “the largest and most powerful alliance for economic and national security ever convened in the Western Hemisphere”, Donald Trump —who highlighted his electoral invincibility by stating “I think I’m nine for nine”— demanded the designation of narcoterrorists as a common threat and the application of drastic sanctions against 24 foreign terrorist organizations designated by the United States. He also urged to secure control of energy pipelines, rare earths, and agricultural corridors against external powers, consolidating the present nations as natural allies, with the explicit exclusion of Brazil, Mexico, and Uruguay.
In total alignment with the sovereign doctrine, President Javier Milei delivered a speech lasting 1 minute and 43 seconds, emphasizing: “We are focused on rebuilding the security system, the intelligence, the intelligence of our country, but it also has an economic dimension, because ensuring economic stability against any external factor and securing the development of the critical resources that God gave us”.
The head of state reaffirmed the role of Argentina as a strategic ally: “We believe that in this new world the security of one country extends to that of its neighbors and closest allies. That’s why we want to have a proactive role in guaranteeing not only Argentine security but also hemispheric security”.
Similarly, he highlighted the “challenges related to today’s world and also to tomorrow’s world, such as the projection over the South Atlantic and Antarctica” and warned against “psychological operators” and “organizations that know no borders, such as transnational crime, drug trafficking, and terrorism”, guaranteeing that the country will strengthen its instruments “to follow their financial structures and protect our institutions from their infiltration”.
President Javier Milei entered the summit alongside the President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, and held a cordial meeting with the President of Peru, Keiko Fujimori. The event took place after the bilateral meeting between Donald Trump and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham, focused on the custody of the Strait of Hormuz amid the siege by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
In this context, and having raised the possibility of American mediation in the conflict over the Falkland Islands, Javier Milei confirmed that he will maintain the diplomatic route for the resolution of the sovereignty over the territory invaded in 1833 by the United Kingdom.
