Javier Milei will meet with Donald Trump in an official visit to the White House

Milei will be the first Latin American leader to be received by Trump at the White House

President Javier Milei will be received by his American counterpart, Donald Trump, in an official visit scheduled for the last week of April or the first days of May.

Chancellor Gerardo Werthein is already in Washington fine-tuning the details of the meeting with the Republican administration, in what represents a key step in consolidating the strategic relationship between Argentina and the United States. Milei will be the first Latin American leader to be received by Trump at the White House.

A growing political and personal bond

On February 22, Milei and Trump had a warm meeting in Maryland during the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where both were speakers. In that context, the Republican leader invited Milei to the Oval Office, a gesture that confirms the ideological and personal harmony between both heads of state.

"President Trump met with Argentine President Javier Milei at the CPAC, where they discussed President @JMilei's innovative economic reforms and how our countries can work more closely together. President Trump also invited President Milei to visit the White House in the coming months", the U.S. administration communicated on its official X account.

Defining the bilateral agenda

On Tuesday, April 1, Werthein will meet with influential Republican Senator Marco Rubio at the Harry S. Truman building, and during that meeting, the exact date of the summit between Milei and Trump at the White House could be defined.

According to information obtained by Infobae, the meeting between both leaders will occur at the end of April or the beginning of May. Although Milei and Trump have already met in Maryland and at Mar-a-Lago (Palm Beach, Florida), this will be the first time they meet as sitting presidents.

A relationship built before Trump's return to power

The bond between Milei and Trump began when Joe Biden was still president and Argentina was seeking support from the Democratic government to negotiate with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, Milei made clear his alignment with Trump after receiving Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Buenos Aires, and then traveling to Maryland to attend the CPAC and reaffirm his support for the former U.S. president.

This gesture, outside traditional political protocols, surprised the Biden administration, while at Mar-a-Lago it was seen as a clear sign of ideological loyalty.

"We have to make Argentina great again. They had runaway inflation. I hear you're doing a fantastic job, I'm very proud of you", Trump praised Milei during the CPAC.

Strategic coincidences and economic differences

Milei and Trump share an aligned geopolitical vision on key issues:

  • Unconditional support for Israel.
  • Rejection of China's influence in Latin America.
  • Firm opposition to the regimes of Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua.

A relationship reminiscent of the Menem-Clinton era

The rapprochement between Milei's administration and the White House recalls the international alignment strategy that Argentina had during the presidency of Carlos Menem in the 1990s, when the country adopted the guidelines of the Washington Consensus, promoted by then-President George H.W. Bush.

Although the international context has changed, the alliance between Milei and Trump promises to be an essential pillar in Argentine foreign policy, with a strong emphasis on anti-communism, support for Israel, and opposition to China and Russia.

Expectations for the White House meeting

Milei's visit to Washington will be a milestone in the bilateral relationship, and it is expected to serve to strengthen cooperation on trade, investments, and international policy. Gerardo Werthein will be key in defining the agenda, and everything indicates that the meeting will take place between the end of April and the beginning of May.

In a context where the United States seeks to reinforce its presence in Latin America in the face of the advance of China and Russia, Milei's consolidation as Trump's main ally in the region could mark a new stage in the bilateral relationship.
